Rotary Club of Lake Nona Hosts Unforgettable Evening Honoring Local Veterans

The Rotary Club of Lake Nona, in partnership with the Veterans Administration and the Orlando Magic, recently organized an extraordinary evening dedicated to honoring some of our nation’s most remarkable heroes—local veterans. This special event, designed to celebrate their service and sacrifices, exemplified the Rotary Club’s guiding principle: Service Above Self.

A heartfelt and huge thank you goes to Rotarian Ann Margaret Howard, whose vision, dedication, and tireless effort were instrumental in making this night a reality. From coordinating with partners to ensuring every detail was thoughtfully planned, Ann Margaret’s leadership was the driving force behind this memorable evening. Her passion and commitment to our veterans are deeply appreciated by all who attended and participated.

The night began with an exciting Orlando Magic game, offering veterans a chance to enjoy top-tier basketball. However, the true highlight came afterward, when the veterans were invited onto the court to cut down the net—a time-honored basketball tradition symbolizing triumph and celebration. Witnessing their joy and pride was an emotional and inspiring moment for everyone involved.

“The look on their faces said it all,” one Rotarian shared. “It was a moment of pure joy and appreciation for their service, and it reminded us why we do what we do.”

This special evening was a testament to the power of community collaboration. By working with the Veterans Administration, the Orlando Magic, and dedicated Rotarians like Ann Margaret, the Rotary Club of Lake Nona created an experience that not only brought joy but also demonstrated gratitude for the sacrifices made by these heroes.

“We couldn’t have done it without Ann Margaret’s leadership,” said a fellow Rotarian. “Her commitment to serving others is inspiring, and this event was a shining example of her dedication.”

The Rotary Club of Lake Nona remains committed to creating meaningful experiences that uplift and celebrate members of our community. For those veterans who participated, this was more than just a night of basketball—it was a celebration of their resilience and contributions.

Rotary and the United Nations have a shared history of working toward peace and addressing humanitarian issues around the world.

During World War II, Rotary informed and educated members about the formation of the United Nations and the importance of planning for peace. Materials such as the booklet “From Here On!” and articles in The Rotarian helped members understand the UN before it was formally established and follow its work after its charter.

Many countries were fighting the war when the term “United Nations” was first used officially in the 1942 “Declaration by United Nations.” The 26 nations that signed it pledged to uphold the ideals expressed by the United States and the United Kingdom the previous year of the common principles “on which they based their hopes for a better future for the world.”

Our brand-new District Disaster Relief Committee, in partnership with the Rotary Action Group, is springing into action to support Disaster Aid USA, Ground Force Humanitarians, and Samaritan’s Purse — all on the ground right now in Jamaica helping families rebuild their lives after devastating storms.

Now it’s our turn to step up — and YOU can help make a huge impact! 🙏

💪 3 Powerful Ways to Help

1️⃣ Nutrition Packets – Feeding Families in Crisis

• The Rotary Club of St. Cloud added $3,500 to support additional packets and on-the-ground relief.

💡 Our Goal: If we can raise another $7,000, we’ll reach $12,000 total — enough to send 30,000 meals at just $0.40 each!

➡️ Make checks payable to: Rotary Club of Orlando Foundation (a 501(c)(3))
📝 Memo line: Jamaica Relief – No Child Hungry

2️⃣ Solar Lights with Phone Chargers – $25 Each
💡 These LuminAID solar lights bring light and power to families still without electricity.

3️⃣ Water Filtration Systems – $35 Each
🚰 Sawyer Filter Safe Harbor FL 5-gallon systems give families clean, safe drinking water where local water is unsafe.
